It’s an interesting analysis of an interesting process, but it isn’t much at all like writing for me. In the broadest possible strokes (pun intended), writing for me consists of the initial writing, and two stages of editing, the macroedit and the microedit. Your third stage seems a lot like the microedit, but the rest of it doesn’t align well at all.

Things can change wildly in the initial writing, that is, from your initial conception (which may not be much at all) to typing “THE END.” Larry McMurtry once said that for Lonesome Dove, one of the greatest novels of the 20th century, he started with Gus sitting on the porch watching a pig eat a rattlesnake. That’s it. No Call. No cattle drive. No whores. Nothing. (Not even a second pig, which is in the finished novel.)

I do see a sort of vague analogy of drawing:plot :: colors:characters, which I think is really cool. But it seems – and I would have guessed this anyway, despite having never painted anything of substance myself – that a lot more has to be committed to in advance when you’re doing a painting than when you’re writing a story or a novel.
